Field Notes (My Experience)

At the parking lot, a cheerful short-haired local spoke to me while I was getting ready.

Man:
“Heading up now?”
Me: “Yes, it’s my first time here.”
Man: “I see. The slope here is pretty tough. Good luck!”

A small exchange like that softens the air. A warm start.

Right after the gate, the steps kick up sharply. A pilgrim couple walked a little ahead, so I matched their pace.

Husband:
“Please, go ahead.”
Me: “Thank you.”
Wife: “These steps are even steeper than I’d heard. It’s hot—hang in there.”
Me: “Let’s all take it slow and steady.”

It’s steep, but compared with Kotohira’s famous steps, this is still manageable. Keep your breath steady and you’ll make it.

By car, I followed the roadside signs on the way up. Google Maps sometimes picks ultra-narrow “why here?” shortcuts. Signs felt safer—but the road was still really narrow. I kept wondering how tour buses even fit.

On the way down, I tried Google’s route and ended up on a wide, well-maintained “agricultural road”. Total surprise—and much easier.
Takeaway: the Google-recommended route is fine here. Whichever you use, yield and slow down.

Bottom line: the climb is tough, but the air calms as you reach the top—and the Main Hall feels like a reward. You’ll likely find that “I can do this now” moment.

  • Crowds & stamps: Weekdays often mean shorter waits.
  • Gear: Non-slip shoes and a backpack to keep hands free.
  • Driving: Poor visibility on climbs—prioritize courtesy and low speeds.

Access (Public Transport / Car)

Public Transport (estimates)

  • Rail: Tosa Kuroshio Railway Gomen–Nahari Line — Tarumi Station or Nahari Station
  • Bus/Taxi: Services up the mountain are limited — check timetables in advance or pre-book a taxi
  • Time: 60–90 min from station including waits (conditions vary)

By Car

  • From Kochi City: National Route 55 → toward Yasuda Town → follow signs up the mountain road
  • Caution: The notorious “Mattate” section has steep grades and sharp curves; watch for oncoming cars at blind corners.

Worship Etiquette — Quick Checklist

  • Main gate: join hands and bow → Purification at the basin (left hand → right hand → rinse mouth → rinse the handle)
  • Main Hall → Daishi Hall: candle ×1 / incense ×3 → offering → bell → recite (Heart Sutra → principal mantra → dedication)
  • Nōkyō: After worship, receive calligraphy and red seal in your stamp book (omikage slip available)
  • Bow once more before leaving the gate

Pack list: non-slip shoes / rain gear / coins (offerings, bus) / small light (avoid evening/night mountain travel)
